Fetterman Apologizes for Senate Democrats Amid Government Shutdown
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) apologized Thursday on behalf of Senate Democrats for failing to end the ongoing government shutdown.
In an interview with CNN’s Manu Raju, Fetterman emphasized the human toll. Federal workers remain unpaid, and millions of Americans risk losing access to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
“And like I said, to all of the viewers, I’m apologizing that we can’t even get our s— together and just open up our government,” Fetterman said.
Shutdown Enters Fourth Week
The shutdown has now stretched into its fourth week. Senate Republicans and Democrats remain deadlocked over spending legislation to start the new fiscal year. As a result, SNAP is under threat. If the shutdown continues, the U.S. Department of Agriculture warns that roughly 42 million Americans could lose food assistance.
SNAP Impact Hits Home
Fetterman shared how the SNAP disruption will affect his community in Pennsylvania.
“I’ll witness it firsthand,” he said. “My wife, Giselle, runs the Free Store in our community. It distributes food three times a week, and her lines have already grown longer. Soon, I’ll encounter people with no SNAP benefits starting on Saturday, and I won’t have an explanation for them.”
Apology and Accountability
Fetterman took responsibility on behalf of his colleagues.
“All I can say is I’m sorry. It’s an absolute failure — what occurred here over the last month. Now the consequences are landing. Imagine being a parent with a couple of kids, trying to fill the refrigerator and pack their lunches when the support they’ve depended on disappears because we can’t even agree to open things up.”
He also criticized Democrats for failing to reach a deal with Republicans.
“If a Democrat can’t just open this up, then our party has bigger problems than I thought. Pay everybody. Our workers have borrowed over a third of a billion dollars to cover their own bills,” Fetterman said.
