The Rock’s transformation for his new role has everyone talking, but not everyone is convinced it’s just for the movie.
A red carpet moment no one expected
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is famous for his towering physique, but at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, he looked almost unrecognizable.
On September 1, 2025, the action star stepped onto the red carpet alongside Emily Blunt to promote their new biopic The Smashing Machine. Johnson, usually known for his muscle-bound frame, appeared noticeably leaner in a light gray double-breasted suit, worn open over a crisp white shirt and gold chain.
His polished look was paired with black leather shoes, a pale blue pocket square, and a gleaming watch — classic Hollywood style. Standing next to Blunt, who dazzled in a strapless, shimmering gown with a sculpted bodice, flowing draped detail, silver platform heels, and bold statement earrings, the duo looked every bit the star pair. But it wasn’t the fashion that sparked a firestorm.
Within minutes, fans were buzzing: The Rock looked shockingly slim.
“Something is not right” — fans react online
Social media lit up with stunned reactions.
On Instagram, one user wrote, “They both look unrecognizable,” while another added, “He looks sick and kinda frail.” A third said, “Doesn’t look like him 😳.”
A viral side-by-side comparison… drew comments like, “His eyes… something is not right if the picture is true. 😢,” “Too skinny,” and “His eyes don’t look as bright.” One person added, “Hopefully he is ok.”
On Facebook… “Wow he looks so different 👀,” one post read. Another remarked, “Man, he’s gotten skinny.” A third joked, “What happened to The Rock? He’s Dave Bautista all of a sudden.”
For a star who built his empire on strength and size, the shift was nothing short of a shock to the system.
The real reason: becoming “The Smashing Machine”
As dramatic as the change looks, there’s a clear explanation. Johnson transformed his body for the role of Mark Kerr, a two-time UFC heavyweight champion whose career was as brutal as it was tragic.
Directed by Bennie Safdie, The Smashing Machine dives into Kerr’s rise in the early days of MMA, his dominance in the cage, and his devastating battle with painkiller addiction and mental health struggles.
Blunt plays Kerr’s wife, Dawn Staples, whose heartbreak mirrors his unraveling. For Johnson, embodying Kerr meant shedding the superhero build and stepping into something rawer, more human.
“This transformation was something I was really hungry to do,” Johnson explained. “I had been very fortunate to have the career that I’ve had over the years and to make the films that I’ve made, but there was a voice inside of me that said, ‘Well, what if I could do more — I want to do more, and what does that look like?’”
Mark Kerr himself: “I am still in disbelief”
The real-life fighter has already praised Johnson’s work. Earlier this year, Kerr wrote on Instagram: “I am still in disbelief that this is real. I am so proud of the work [Dwayne Johnson] put into becoming The Smashing Machine.”
“I have so much gratitude, humility and respect for every little detail production uncovered. Can’t wait to share this experience with the world,” Kerr wrote.
A new chapter for The Rock?
Even with explanations, fans can’t stop speculating. Johnson’s leaner frame has sparked more questions than answers. Is it simply for the role, or could it mark a turning point in how he presents himself moving forward?
