Expert highlights Zelenskyy’s emotional restraint in heated meeting with Trump at the White House

A High-Stakes Encounter

On October 17, President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House to discuss potential solutions for ending the ongoing war in Ukraine. The meeting came as Trump intensified his push for a peace deal, warning Russia of a “new step of aggression” if negotiations failed.

However, Russia reportedly responded with threats of its own—raising the stakes before the two leaders even sat down.

Tension Behind Closed Doors

According to reports, the 79-year-old Trump urged Ukraine to accept Vladimir Putin’s terms, including surrendering the Donbas region. Zelenskyy, 47, firmly refused, and the discussion quickly grew heated. Witnesses described moments of raised voices and expletives, underscoring the emotional strain surrounding the talks.

Despite the clash, Trump told reporters afterward that he remained hopeful a peace agreement could be reached.

“I think both Zelenskyy and Putin want it done,” Trump said. “All they have to do is get along a little bit.”

When asked if he believed he could persuade Putin to end the war, Trump’s response was simple: “Yep, we can.”

Reading Between the Gestures

Body language expert Dr. Beth Dawson analyzed the interaction, noting a striking contrast in demeanor between the two leaders.

“When Trump is asked if he can persuade Putin, he straightens up, nods, and confidently says, ‘Yep, we can,’” Dawson explained.

Zelenskyy’s reaction, she said, was more restrained yet revealing.

“He presses his lips together—a small sign of tension or restraint often linked to frustration. Then, instead of showing discomfort, he turns toward Trump and smiles.”

According to Dawson, this mix of composure and restraint showcased Zelenskyy’s emotional control amid pressure.

“The pressed lips reveal the weight of leading a nation at war, while the smile restores calm and signals cooperation,” she added.

A Divisive Outlook on Peace

Though Zelenskyy rejected any deal involving Ukrainian land concessions, Trump reiterated in a Sunday Morning Futures interview that he expects Putin will retain some territory.

Trump revealed he had spoken to Putin for two hours earlier that week. When asked if Putin would consider returning Ukrainian land, Trump replied:

“He’s gonna take something. They fought, and he’s won certain property. You know, we’re the only country that goes in, wins a war, and then leaves.”

The Bigger Picture

The fiery meeting underscored the deep divide between the two leaders’ visions for peace. While Zelenskyy stands firm on sovereignty, Trump’s comments suggest a pragmatic—if controversial—path forward.

Still, amid the political intensity, experts say Zelenskyy’s measured composure may have spoken louder than any words that day.
