Nearly twenty years ago Mike Weirsky asked Eileen to marry him at a QuickChek convenience store in New Jersey. They were married for 15 years before things fell apart and they got divorced in early 2019. Money had always been tight and it was a problem during the marriage.
Eileen had been the one who carried the household with her income. After the divorce she was ordered by the court to pay Mike spousal support for five years. She went along with it but it never felt right since he had not been working.
In March of 2019 the Mega Millions lottery numbers were announced. The winning ticket came from the same QuickChek where Mike had proposed to her years before. She could not believe it when she found out her ex-husband was the winner.
Mike, who had been unemployed for most of their marriage, ended up winning $273 million just months after the divorce was final. Suddenly, everything was different. Eileen later said that what she pays him in alimony now is just “pocket change” for him.
She made it clear she is not trying to get a share of his winnings. She also is not looking to repair their relationship. Eileen says what she really wants is simple. She just wants to stop paying him.
