A House Fire Is One of My Biggest Fears
Fires terrify me. That’s why I unplug my phone charger before bed and double-check my smoke alarms.
However, Jason Whitaker’s warning from Kentucky? I had never heard anything like it.
A Close Call in 2019
In the fall of 2019, Jason Whitaker almost lost his home to a fire.
At first, he noticed a strange, burning smell. Suspecting an electrical fire, he searched every room. Yet it took a while before he spotted the danger.
The Shocking Discovery
Eventually, Jason found the source — a spiral light bulb.
Realizing how close he had come to disaster, he quickly posted a warning on Facebook:
“These light bulbs will burn your house down.”
What Went Wrong?
So, what caused the bulb to smolder?
Jason shared photos showing the bulb packed with ladybugs. Apparently, the bugs had crawled between the spirals after the bulb sat in a lamp for four to five years.
Since insects are drawn to warmth and light, the inside of the bulb had become their perfect home.
Jason wrote,
“You can see how close it came to igniting. I changed all the light bulbs. Please check yours.”
Others Share Their Experiences
Jason wasn’t alone.
One user commented,
“This just happened to us. We moved into a new house and the bulbs were there. Replaced them now.”
The Warning Goes Viral
Jason’s post spread quickly — shared over 430,000 times.
Still, many people don’t realize the hidden fire risk spiral bulbs can pose.
A Reminder: Stay Alert
Of course, no one wants to cause panic. Jason’s goal wasn’t to scare anyone but to save lives.
So, take a moment. Check your spiral bulbs. Inspect the rest of your lights while you’re at it. It only takes a few minutes — and it could prevent a tragedy.
