Elton John opens up on coping with ‘distressing’ situation after losing most of his eyesight

Elton John has confessed that his ongoing health issues surrounding his eyesight is proving distressing as he admits there are certain things he can’t do anymore.

Elton spoke out last year about the issues he has been having after suffering from an eye infection that left him with irreparable damage.

The 78-year-old musician opened up about his ongoing health issues and the gravity of the situation.

Speaking to the Times of London on Friday (April 4), the ‘Rocket Man’ hitmaker said: “I can see you, but I can’t see TV, I can’t read. I can’t see my boys playing rugby and soccer, and it has been a very stressful time because I’m used to soaking it all up.”

He added that his current situation was ‘distressing’ but he was still thankful for his family, notably his husband David Furnish and their two sons, 14-year-old Zachary and 12-year-old Elijah.

The Brit continued: “You get emotional, but you have to get used to it because I’m lucky to have the life I have.

“I still have my wonderful family, and I can still see something out of [my left eye]. So you say to yourself, ‘Just get on with it.”

Speaking to ABC in November last year, Elton revealed the extent of the eye infection and how he was ‘stuck’ at that moment.

He said: “I had an infection in the South of France. It’s been four months since I haven’t been able to see, and my left eye’s not the greatest.

“So, there’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but… I’m kind of stuck at the moment, because I can do something like this [the interview], but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for a start.

“It’s never fortunate for anything like this to happen. It kinda floored me, and I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.’

A month later, Elton again spoke of his ailing health at the premiere of his production, The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical.

The singer took the opportunity to praise his husband for all the support he has given him as he has struggled with losing his sight.

He said: “To my husband, who’s been my rock, because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because as you know, I’ve lost my eyesight, so it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it.”
