A Surprise Meeting at the Met Gala
Their story didn’t begin with a glamorous announcement. Instead, it started with an unexpected encounter at the 2016 Met Gala. Heard, still married to Johnny Depp at the time, claimed she was stood up. While waiting in line, she struck up a conversation with Musk.
“I was standing right in front of a gentleman,” she recalled in Walter Isaacson’s 2023 biography Elon Musk. “It was Elon.”
Musk reminded her they’d met once before—when he was with his mother. Although intrigued by Heard after watching Machete Kills in 2013, he waited until her divorce was finalized in 2017 to begin dating.
A Short, Intense Relationship
Their romance burned bright—and fast. It lasted about a year and was filled with highs and lows. Heard once surprised Musk with a visit to his Tesla factory in California. He returned the gesture by visiting her on the Aquaman set in Australia.
They bonded over geek culture. Heard even said, “I guess I could be called a geek for someone who can also be called a hot chick.”
“It Was Brutal.”
When asked about the relationship, Musk didn’t sugarcoat it. His blunt, three-word response to Isaacson? “It was brutal.”
Despite the ups and downs, the couple remained close after the breakup. Musk commented on one of Heard’s Instagram photos, then followed up to clarify:
“Although Amber and I did break up, we are still friends, remain close and love one another.”
Demands of Work Took Their Toll
Busy schedules and long distances eventually wore them down. Both admitted their careers made maintaining the relationship tough. Heard offered her own poetic reflection:
“I love him very much. Elon loves fire, and sometimes it burns him.”
