Trump Pushes to Rename Veterans Day
Donald Trump wants to rename Veterans Day to Victory Day for World War I. He claims Americans should start celebrating their military victories again.
Trump’s Proposal on Victory Days
In addition, Trump suggests renaming Victory in Europe Day (May 8) to Victory in World War II Day. He argues the U.S. played the biggest role in winning WWII and deserves to honor its success.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump declared:
“Many of our allies celebrate May 8th as Victory Day. But we did more than any other country to win WWII. I am hereby renaming May 8th as Victory Day for World War II and November 11th as Victory Day for World War I.
We won both wars. No one came close to us in strength, bravery, or military brilliance. Yet we never celebrate anything — because we no longer have leaders who know how! We’re going to start celebrating our victories again!”
Background on Veterans Day
Originally called Armistice Day, Veterans Day was expanded in the 1950s to honor all U.S. veterans. It became a federal holiday in 1968 and now recognizes veterans from all conflicts.
Rising Criticism and International Concerns
However, Trump’s push to rename Veterans Day has sparked criticism. Many question why the country should change a holiday that honors all service members.
Moreover, his comments on WWII could stir international backlash, especially from Russia. After all, Russia still honors the Soviet Union’s massive wartime losses.
