Trump Jokes About Becoming Pope
After joking that he wanted to become the new pope himself, Donald Trump has now responded to today’s historic announcement.
The Passing of Pope Francis
Last month, Pope Francis passed away at age 88 at Domus Sanctae Marthae in Vatican City. Since then, speculation swirled about who would succeed him. Eight cardinals stood out as top contenders for the role.
The Conclave’s Choice Revealed
Earlier today, the conclave ended its secretive meeting and formally selected the next pope. The choice? Sixty-nine-year-old Cardinal Robert Prevost, who will take the papal name Pope Leo XIV.
Trump Reacts to the News
Although Trump had joked about wearing the papal robes, he showed no hard feelings about the decision. In fact, he expressed excitement that an American is now head of the Church.
On Truth Social, Trump posted:
“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”
Who Is Pope Leo XIV?
Pope Leo XIV was born in Chicago, making history as the first American pope. His past roles include serving as Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru (2015–2023) and leading the Order of Saint Augustine (2001–2013).
How the Election Unfolded
The announcement came from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. Senior Catholic leaders had gathered in Rome for the monumental task of choosing the next pope.
Globally, there are over 240 cardinals, though only 120 can serve as papal electors. Cardinals must also be under age 80 to vote.
This time, under Michelangelo’s famous Sistine Chapel ceiling, 138 eligible cardinals cast their votes. Over two days, they voted up to four times a day until two-thirds agreed on Pope Leo XIV.
