Donald Trump just pardoned dozens of people involved in bid to overturn 2020 election

On Sunday, Donald Trump issued a dozen new pardons. It involved some of his top allies in the 2020 ‘fake electors’ case, including former New York Mayor and Trumpist Rudy Giuliani.

Justice Department Pardon Attorney Ed Martin posted the relevant document Sunday night, sharing a long list of prominent Trump allies who backed the president’s effort to undermine the 2020 election.

Those on the list received a “full, complete and unconditional” pardon. People such as Rudy Giuliani, who pushed an effort to pressure state legislatures to reject Biden’s victories in key swing states. They arranged alternate slates of electors in key states in the election.

Other people on the list included Mark Meadows, Donald Trump’s chief of staff in 2020; attorneys John Eastman and Kenneth Chesebro, who helped put together a strategy to pressure then-Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the election on January 6th, 2021; and conservative attorney Sidney Power.

The latter, per Politico, launched a “fringe legal assault on election results in key swing states.” As none of those on the pardon list were charged with federal crimes, the pardons themselves are mainly symbolic.

Still, some on the list had been charged in states that also investigated Trump’s attempt to subvert the election in 2021, for example, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada; however, the president’s power doesn’ät include pardoning state crimes.

Meanwhile, as Politico reported, there are no dates on the list, which makes it unclear when Donald Trump actually signed it.

The documentrs stated that the pardon applied to “all United States citizens for conduct relating to the advice, creation, organization, execution, submission, support, voting activities, participation in or advocacy for or of any slate or proposed slate of presidential electors … as well for any conduct relating to their efforts to expose voting fraud and vulnerabilities in the 2020 presidential election.”
