Trump’s History with the Met Gala
Donald Trump has attended the Met Gala in the past, even proposing to Melania on the way there in 2004. However, this year, he was noticeably absent — and has been for a while.
Why Trump is Banned
The absence wasn’t accidental. Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue and Met Gala chair since 1997, made it clear years ago that Trump would never be invited again. In 2017, she told The Late Late Show with James Corden, “He will never be invited again.” This decision followed Trump’s election as president and remains in effect.
Trump’s Past with the Gala
Trump’s history with the Met Gala dates back to the ’80s and ’90s, when he attended with his ex-wives, Ivana and Marla Maples. His proposal to Melania on the way to the 2004 gala generated major tabloid buzz.

Changing Nature of the Met Gala
Over time, the event’s focus has shifted from glitzy celebrity appearances to a celebration of creativity and history. Anna Wintour has emphasized that the gala is about beauty, not politics. However, recent guest list choices suggest otherwise, with political figures like Trump excluded.
Others Excluded
Trump isn’t the only one banned from the Met Gala. Notably missing this year were Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg, all former regulars.
This Year’s Theme
This year’s theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, centered on black designers and how fashion challenges stereotypes. According to cultural critic Louis Piscano, the theme “sends a clear message” about the political tone of the event.
