Dick Van Dyke Opens Up About The ‘Curse’ Of Nearing 100

Dick Van Dyke may be one of Hollywood’s most beloved icons, but the 99-year-old legend recently opened up about the emotional toll of reaching such a remarkable milestone—what he calls the “curse” of living to almost 100.

During a candid Q&A in Malibu, California, the Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang star reflected on the heartbreak of outliving many close friends, including fellow actor and longtime pal Ed Asner. Van Dyke revealed the two had plans to remake The Odd Couple before Asner’s passing in 2021.

“That would’ve been such fun, and we lost it. I’ve lost a lot of friends,” Van Dyke shared, according to People.

Sitting beside him was his wife, Arlene Silver, 53, who added poignantly, “He’s outlived everybody. That’s the curse of living to almost 100.”

Despite the sorrow that comes with longevity, Van Dyke remains impressively upbeat. “Well, life’s been good to me. I can’t complain,” he said with a smile, showcasing the optimism that has become one of his trademarks over his decades-long career.

The couple, who tied the knot in 2012 despite their 46-year age difference, also spoke about their strong and enduring relationship. “We get along so well. Everybody said it wouldn’t work,” Van Dyke noted.

Silver chimed in with affection, saying, “We just care about each other so much. It’s eerie how well [the marriage] works.” She added with a laugh, “People the same age don’t last.”

While he may be approaching 100, Van Dyke continues to live an active and healthy lifestyle, which he credits for his longevity. In a January appearance on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, he shared that he still exercises three days a week.

“I get down and do a lot of stretching and yoga,” he explained. “I use the workout equipment to get a full body sweat.”

Clearly, his dedication to wellness is paying off. Van Dyke is not only staying fit but also looking ahead to the future with excitement. In that same interview, the Hollywood legend revealed that he’s eagerly anticipating his 100th birthday and is planning to celebrate in a big way.

“I’m looking forward to a big party,” he teased.

As he nears a century of life, Dick Van Dyke continues to inspire with his humor, resilience, and zest for life. While he acknowledges the emotional challenges of aging, he remains a shining example of grace and gratitude—a true Hollywood treasure.
