Despite receiving hateful letters for their love 50 years back, their interracial marriage is still flourishing today.

Leslie Uggams: A Multifaceted Career

Leslie Uggams, a talented actor and singer, has captivated audiences for decades in theater and film. Although she boasts a remarkable seven-decade career, she is best known for her role in the Deadpool series.

A Defiant Love Story

In 1965, Leslie married Grahame Pratt, a White Australian. Their interracial marriage defied societal norms, potentially inspiring a film of its own.

Early Musical Beginnings

Leslie began her career at just 10 years old when she recorded a song for MGM in 1953. Encouraged by her aunt, soprano Eloise Uggams, she attended the prestigious Juilliard School of Music and the Professional Children’s School in New York.

Breaking Ground in Television

Leslie hosted The Leslie Uggams Show in 1969, marking the first network variety show led by a Black host since The Nat King Cole Show.

A Reunion in Australia

During a tour in Australia, Leslie reconnected with Grahame in Sydney. They had first met as students in New York. Despite her aunt’s warnings against dating a White man, Leslie fell for Grahame.

Navigating Family Concerns

At 21, Leslie unexpectedly found love with Grahame. However, she worried about her family’s acceptance of their interracial relationship. After getting engaged, Grahame visited Leslie in New York to meet her family.

Differences in Cultural Perception

Leslie noted that Grahame’s Australian background influenced their experiences. Unlike many White Americans, he didn’t feel self-conscious in their company. Leslie said he blended well with her friends and earned their respect.

Facing Adversity

While living in New York, Leslie faced hate mail regarding their marriage, though they didn’t encounter the same racial issues as others. She recalled receiving anonymous letters during her tours, including one addressed to “The Little Negro Entertainer.”

Family Life and Achievements

As Leslie’s manager, Grahame supported her career. The couple welcomed two daughters, Danielle in 1970 and Justice in 1976. In 1977, Leslie earned an Emmy nomination for her role as Kizzy in the miniseries Roots. Two years later, she starred as Lillian Rogers Parks in Backstairs at the White House, earning another Emmy nomination.

Continuing Success

Leslie won a Daytime Emmy Award in 1983 for hosting NBC’s Fantasy. She has also appeared on various television shows, including Family Guy, I Spy, and Magnum P.I.

A Lasting Partnership

Now married for 55 years, Leslie and Grahame enjoy a fulfilling life together with their granddaughter, Cassidy. Leslie reflects, “We have a lot of fun together, but it’s not always sunshine and roses.” Their enduring love inspires many, showcasing their unwavering support for each other.
