Societal Pressure to Have Children
We all know what it’s like to face questions about having children. Society often pressures us to have a good job, get married, and start a family. For couples who choose not to have kids, the decision can come under scrutiny. Many feel the need to justify their choice, especially when others ask intrusive and personal questions.
The Challenge of Being Judged
These questions can be uncomfortable and invasive, particularly when asked why someone has chosen not to be a parent. Some may even view not having children as selfish. Yet, when people with Down syndrome decide to have children, this idea of egoism shifts dramatically.
A Surprising Announcement
Over 20 years ago, Patti White of California received surprising news. Her daughter, Lisa, with Down syndrome, was pregnant. While Down syndrome often leads to physical and mental challenges, many individuals with this condition live independently, work, and care for themselves.
A Rare Occurrence
It is uncommon for two individuals with Down syndrome to have a child, as men with the condition are often thought to be sterile. But Lisa’s situation defied the odds. At 29, she lived independently and worked full-time at a local Goodwill store.
Support From Family
Lisa had been in a relationship with a man who also had Down syndrome. Despite the rarity of such pregnancies, Patti supported her daughter’s decision to keep the child. When Lisa called Patti to share the news, she was both thrilled and confused.

Facing Criticism
Many criticized Lisa for her decision, calling her irresponsible. Some questioned whether she could be a good mother. Yet, Lisa’s family stood by her, supporting her throughout the pregnancy.
Lisa’s Experience as a Mother
Though Lisa’s pregnancy was high-risk, she navigated it with determination. She took childbirth classes, hired a pregnancy coach, and managed typical pregnancy symptoms despite working full-time. Her son, Nic, was born four weeks early and, like his parents, had Down syndrome.
Tragedy and Triumph
Though Nic’s father passed away when he was five, Lisa and Patti raised him together. Over time, Nic thrived and achieved great success. Now 24, Nic is a college graduate, with immense respect for his mother and grandmother.
Overcoming the Odds
Lisa’s decision to become a mother was met with skepticism and caused her to lose touch with some friends. Parents feared she might influence their daughters, but Lisa remained unfazed. Her family’s support, particularly from Patti, helped her raise Nic to become the confident young man he is today.
A Heartwarming Update
In 2016, Patti shared an update on Facebook, expressing pride in how far they’ve come. “Lisa will turn 50, and Nic will turn 20. Our goal was for Lisa to have a meaningful relationship with her son,” Patti wrote. The family’s love and resilience shine through despite the obstacles they’ve faced.
A Legacy of Love and Inspiration
Lisa and Nic’s story challenges preconceived notions about people with Down syndrome. It shows the world that love and determination can overcome the odds. They are truly an inspiration and deserve our admiration and respect.
