‘Desperate Housewives’ And ‘Young Sheldon’ Star Passed Away At 71

Valerie Mahaffey, the award-winning actress known for her roles in Desperate Housewives and Young Sheldon, has died at 71. Mahaffey, who had been battling cancer, passed away on Friday in Los Angeles, her publicist Jillian Roscoe confirmed per the Daily Mail.

With a career spanning over four decades, she is survived by her husband, Joseph Kell, and their daughter, Alice.

Her Husband told Variety, “I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its most endearing actresses. She will be missed.”

Valerie Mahaffey was born on June 16, 1953, in Sumatra, Indonesia.Her Mother was Canadian with a Texan father, Mahaffey spent her early years in Nigeria, England, and Canada before settling in Austin, Texas, at age 16. She graduated from Austin High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin in 1975. Her professional acting journey began on Broadway, with performances in productions such as Rex and Dracula alongside Raúl Juliá.

Mahaffey’s television debut came with the NBC daytime soap opera The Doctors (1979–1981), where she portrayed Ashley Bennett, earning a Daytime Emmy nomination in 1980. She gained widespread recognition for her role as Eve, a hypochondriac in CBS’s Northern Exposure, which earned her the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1992. Notably, she was the only cast member from the series to receive an Emmy.

Throughout her career, Mahaffey showcased her talent in numerous television series, including Wings, Seinfeld, ER, Frasier, Desperate Housewives (as Alma Hodge), Glee, Young Sheldon (as Ms. MacElroy), Dead to Me, and Big Sky (as Helen Pergman). Her film credits encompass roles in Jungle 2 Jungle, Seabiscuit, Sully, and French Exit, the latter earning her an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Female.

In Season 3 of Desperate Housewives (2006–2007), Mahaffey played Alma Hodge, the estranged wife of Orson Hodge. Alma’s return to Wisteria Lane introduced a complex storyline involving deception and intrigue.

From 2017 to 2020, Mahaffey appeared in Young Sheldon as Victoria MacElroy, Sheldon’s English teacher at Medford High School. Her character often found herself challenged by Sheldon’s exceptional intellect and unconventional behavior, providing both comedic and heartfelt moments in the series.

Mahaffey’s final projects included the Apple TV+ series Echo 3 (2022) and the film The 8th Day (2025).
