At the Cannes Film Festival, Denzel Washington quickly shifted the spotlight — not toward his new film, but toward a photographer. What began as a glamorous premiere for Highest 2 Lowest on May 19 turned confrontational when Washington called someone out in front of the cameras.

A Photographer Crosses the Line

While walking with co-star A$AP Rocky, Washington stopped abruptly. Reports say a photographer tugged on his suit jacket — an action that immediately triggered a reaction.
Lip-reading expert Jeremy Freeman later analyzed footage for the Daily Mail. According to him, Washington warned:
“Hey, one – one more time, stop. Let me tell you – stop, stop – never put your hands on me again.”

The Confrontation Escalates

Washington pointed at the man, who smiled in response.
Still addressing him, Washington added:
“I’m talking to you, stop, all right.”
Freeman claims the photographer replied “not allowed” and laughed, saying:
“Yes, yes, yes.”

Moments later, the same photographer allegedly grabbed Washington again and asked, “Can I take a picture?”
Holding back frustration, Washington responded sharply:
“Stop, stop it, stop it. I mean it. Stop, stop it.”

Social Media Defends Denzel

The confrontation quickly went viral online.

Festival director Thierry Frémaux surprised him with an honorary Palme d’Or before the screening.
Frémaux said:
“It’s a very special day. Denzel, because you are here, we want to make something special for you… a way to tell you our adoration.”
Visibly moved, Washington replied:
“I’m a little emotional… but from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all. I’m blessed beyond measure.”
