10-Year-Old Emma Marries Her Sweetheart Days Before Losing Her Battle with Ca**er
Ask any parent, and they’ll tell you—they’d do anything for their child. But sometimes, even the deepest love can’t stop life’s cruel turns.
That reality hit hard for Alina and Aaron Edwards, whose world changed the day doctors diagnosed their 9-year-old daughter, Emma, with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
A Devastating Diagnosis
Despite the heartbreak, Emma’s parents held onto hope. But after several months of treatment, doctors delivered the worst news—there was nothing more they could do.
Faced with limited time, Alina and Aaron focused on one thing: making Emma’s final wishes come true.
Her Final Wish: A Wedding
Most kids dream of Disneyland or meeting a celebrity when facing a terminal illness. But Emma had a different dream. She wanted to marry her best friend and school sweetheart, DJ, also 10 years old.
Her community rallied behind her. Volunteers and supporters called themselves “Emma’s Army” and made it their mission to give Emma the magical day she longed for.
A Love Story Beyond Their Years
Emma’s mom shared that her daughter had always dreamed of being a wife and having three kids. In fact, Emma and DJ had already attempted to marry at school when they were eight—complete with classmates as bridesmaids and groomsmen. Their teacher, however, didn’t allow it.
But this time, they had full support. “We threw it together in less than two days,” Alina said. “Everything was donated. It was so precious.”

A Day to Remember
On June 29, 2023, Emma arrived at her wedding in a wheelchair pushed by her parents. She wore a radiant purple dress and smiled as her father wheeled her down the aisle.
Emma and DJ exchanged rings and vows. After the ceremony, DJ kissed his bride, and Emma returned to bed, glowing with joy.
Her groom, DJ, said in an interview, “I thought she was the most beautiful person I ever saw. Ever since, I loved her.”
A Bond That Touched Many
Emma’s mom praised DJ in a touching Facebook post:
“DJ has been Emma’s ‘Boo Bear’ since 3rd grade. He protected her, helped her, and made her smile. He will always be family.”
Their bond, formed in childhood innocence, became a beacon of love and strength for everyone watching.
Saying Goodbye
Just two weeks after her wedding, on July 11, 2023, Emma passed away surrounded by her family. She was just 10 years old.
Her obituary read:
“Emma Brooks Edwards entered heaven and into the loving arms of her Great-grandma Frannie Annie… Emma, our little unicorn… loved arts and crafts, jokes, her family, Jesus, and her newlywed ‘husband,’ DJ. She was a light to all who loved her and an inspiration to all she met.”
Honoring Her Legacy
Emma’s story continues to inspire those who hear it. She faced her battle with strength, humor, and limitless love.
Let us honor her memory by supporting all families facing childhood cancer—and by cherishing every moment with the ones we love.
Rest in peace, Emma. You were truly one of a kind.
