Dad took son to rehab, but he stole his phone and called police

Addiction is one of the most difficult challenges a person can face. The truth is, however, that it doesn’t only affect the person who is addicted, but everyone around them. The struggle is real. The pain is real. And sometimes, the inability to help the addict overcome the issue, or even help them admit they have a problem, is the worst part of all.

A father, desperate to save his son and help him overcome his struggles with addiction, made a decision to take him to rehab.

Sadly, the son, unable to face the truth of the severity of his problem with substance abuse, refused to get help. On their way to rehab, the son grabbed his father’s phone and called the police, saying he had been kidnapped.

In no time, Officer Mike Carpinelli arrived where the son and the father were; in the middle of the road.

He could sense the young man wasn’t acting rationally, but he didn’t use force nor did he escalate the situation. Instead, he decided to listen to the young man carefully, asking him what his problem was. He claimed his father was forcing him into rehab and insisted he had no addictions, though it was obvious that he did.

Officer Carpinelli showed empathy. He took his time to talk to the young man, sharing stories of people he knew who were in a similar situation. Eventually, the son agreed to go to rehab but only if Officer Carpinelli took him there.

The officer agreed and drove him himself, no sirens or flashing lights, just two people on a quiet journey toward hope.

When they arrived at the facility, Officer Carpinelli didn’t just leave him at the door, but walked him inside and made sure he felt safe and comfortable.

We don’t know what happened next and whether the young man was able to overcome his addiction with the help of the professionals at the facility, but we know that this story serves as a reminder that kindness can make all the difference, even when it feels like there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
