At an antiques auction, a collector revealed how they found one of the oldest Coca-Cola bottles in existence for a pittance, only to realise its astounding actual value.
Daytime TV viewers may be familiar with some of the treasures people display on the BBC show Antiques Roadshow. The outcomes are frequently rather unexpected; for example, one young man discovered that a table he possessed was worth more than the property in which he found it.
Antiques can refer to almost anything older than your grandmother, although we typically think of old paintings or artwork, jewellery, or furniture when we talk about them.
For the apparent reason that most of them don’t live that long, it’s highly uncommon to think about vintage food or drink items.
The contents of this old, sealed Coca-Cola bottle appear to be in perfect condition, and it may be the first time you’ve ever seen Coke in person before World War One—unless you’ve also seen that viral video of the American diner that “still makes Coke the old-fashioned way.” A hundred-year-old drink is never likely to look or taste good, and a hundred-year-old milk carton is probably enough to destroy a small town.
Reddit user partyjam3 told how, more than two years ago, they found a bottle of Coke that is thought to be over a century old in a vintage store, but at the time, they lacked the $100 necessary to purchase it.
He thought his discovery was much older, though, after visiting the Coca-Cola museum, where he discovered that the oldest bottle they had on file was from the 1940s.
He was thrilled to discover that the bottle was still there when he returned to the store and that its price had further decreased to $75 (£55). He quickly paid the charge and brought it to the Georgia State Raceway Museum’s Antiques Roadshow, which is held in the United States.
Speaking to Newsweek, he said: “My appraiser was baffled when he found nothing on his computer with which to compare my bottle. He could only ‘guesstimate’ a value saying he had never before seen a sealed early 1900’s bottle.”
And as for the value?
“He was quite sure it had never been opened,” he went on. “He thought the historical value could range from $1,000 (£745) to way more at an auction.”
Other forum commenters suggested that he could earn a lot in other ways, such as selling its secrets to Pepsi or bringing it to Coca-Cola.
It appears likely that he will choose the former over the latter because he collects Coca-Cola.
