Cheerleader critically wounded at a teen gathering to become an organ donor: “She’s giving the greatest gift.”

Tragedy at “The Pit”

On October 18, 2025, 18-year-old Alabama cheerleader Kimber Mills was shot in the head during a gathering in a wooded area of eastern Jefferson County known as The Pit. Three others were also injured. A 27-year-old suspect, Steven Tyler Whitehead, has been charged with attempted murder—a charge expected to be upgraded to murder.

The Party

The incident occurred early Sunday morning at a bonfire party in Pinson, near Highway 75 North. Kimber, a senior at Cleveland High School, attended the event. She was a cheerleader, track athlete, and aspiring nurse, known for her bright and positive personality.

The Shooting

Witnesses reported that Whitehead arrived at the party and began harassing guests, including Kimber. An altercation escalated, and Whitehead allegedly opened fire on the crowd.

Four people were shot: Kimber, an 18-year-old male, a 21-year-old male, and a 20-year-old female. Silas McCay, 21, tried to protect Kimber and was shot ten times. Kimber sustained gunshot wounds to her head and leg and was rushed to a Birmingham hospital in critical condition.

Catastrophic Injuries

Doctors confirmed Kimber suffered a catastrophic brain injury. Medical staff informed her family that surgery could not restore any meaningful function. She was placed on life support, and loved ones gathered to say goodbye.

Honoring Her Legacy

Her family announced that Kimber would donate her organs, fulfilling her wish to help others even in death. The hospital held an “Honor Walk” to allow staff and family to pay their respects before her organs were donated.

At Cleveland High School, classmates, teachers, and community members held prayer gatherings and tributes. Friends remembered Kimber as “bubbly, kind, and full of life.” A fundraiser was launched to support her family and the other victims.

Legal Proceedings

Steven Tyler Whitehead was arrested and charged with multiple counts of attempted murder, with bond set at $180,000. Authorities stated that if Kimber passes away, his charges could be upgraded to murder. Police continue investigating Whitehead’s motive and his connection to the victims.

Community Mourning

The shooting has deeply shaken the small Alabama community. Kimber Mills is remembered for her radiant spirit. Her final act of organ donation will give life to others and leave a lasting legacy of generosity.
