British celebrity chef and restaurateur Gordon Ramsay revealed on Instagram Saturday that he was diagnosed with skin cancer and has since had it removed.
The 58-year-old TV star shared a photo of himself with a bandage covering part of his face and neck, along with another image showing stitches running from his earlobe up to the top of his neck.
Ramsay wrote “Grateful and so appreciative for the incredible team at The Skin Associates and their fast reactive work on removing this Basal Cell Carcinoma thank you ! Please don’t forget your sunscreen this weekend ❤️I promise you it’s not a face lift! I’d need a refund…….😜”
According to the Mayo Clinic, Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer. It starts in basal cells, which make new skin cells as old ones die.
- Where it appears: Usually on sun-exposed areas like the face, head, and neck, but it can occur elsewhere.
- Cause: Most often from long-term exposure to UV radiation (sunlight or tanning beds). Using sunscreen and limiting sun exposure lowers risk.
- What it looks like:
- A shiny, skin-colored bump (pearly on lighter skin, brown/black on darker skin).
- A dark lesion with a raised, translucent edge.
- A flat, scaly patch with a raised border that can grow larger over time.
- A white, waxy scar-like area with unclear edges.
- When to see a doctor: If you notice a new growth, changes in an existing spot, or a sore that doesn’t heal, schedule a medical checkup.
