Calgary Skateboarders Honoured for Heroic Intervention

Quick Thinking in a Dangerous Moment

In 2015, four young Calgary skateboarders—Arnaud Nimenya, Carsyn Wright, James Hielema, and Starlyn Rivas–Perez—acted without hesitation to stop a sexual assault. While skateboarding near the Chinook Mall parkade, they noticed a confused and intoxicated young woman with a man who seemed threatening.

Recognizing the danger, the teens returned after initially observing the situation. They saw the man assault the woman and immediately stepped in. Their swift action disrupted the attack and ensured the woman’s safety until police arrived.

Courage Recognized by Police

In 2016, the Calgary Police Service formally honoured the skateboarders at the Chief’s Awards Gala. They received Awards of Exceptional Recognition for their bravery. Officers praised their courage and quick thinking, noting that their actions went far beyond ordinary bystander intervention.

A Lesson in Vigilance and Courage

The story highlights the importance of stepping in when someone is in danger. These skateboarders set a powerful example of vigilance, compassion, and courage. Their actions remind the public that even small interventions can prevent serious harm.

Inspiring Future Action

By recognizing these young heroes, the Calgary Police Service hopes to encourage others to act in critical situations. In a world often filled with apathy, the bravery of these four skateboarders proves that courage and humanity still shine through.
