Fans expected a passionate set, but few anticipated the searing political remarks he delivered about America and the recent ICE operation in Minneapolis. His words sent shockwaves from the stage straight to Washington.

A Blistering Call to Action
On January 17, 2026, just before performing his iconic anthem The Promised Land, Springsteen addressed the audience. He explained that the song once celebrated the American dream—but no longer.

“Right now, we face incredibly critical times,” he said. “The United States, the ideals and values it has upheld for 250 years, are being tested like never before.”

Springsteen urged fans to rise and defend what is right. He continued,
“If you oppose heavily armed federal troops invading a city and targeting citizens with Gestapo-like tactics; if you believe no one deserves to be killed for protesting, you must act.”

He then quoted Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey:
“ICE should get the [expletive] out of Minneapolis.”

The audience erupted in cheers. Springsteen dedicated the performance not only to the crowd but also to Renee Nicole Good, the woman who died during an ICE encounter on January 7 in Minneapolis.

In response to Good’s death, tensions in Minneapolis have escalated. The Pentagon reportedly placed 1,500 soldiers on alert, including two infantry battalions from the Army’s 11th Airborne Division. Any deployment, however, would require President Donald Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807—a measure considered unlikely at this time.

Springsteen’s History of Outspokenness
Longtime fans know this isn’t Springsteen’s first political salvo. During the 2024 election, he endorsed Kamala Harris and repeatedly criticized Trump as dangerous, threatening civil rights, and cozying up to dictators. While touring England last year, he declared that Trump had no business leading a nation. The president fired back with personal attacks, labeling Springsteen “dumb as a rock” and warning him to “KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the Country.”

Springsteen’s outspokenness extended beyond Trump. The former reality star president also accused celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Beyoncé of secretly backing Harris with Democratic funds.

White House Pushback
Following Springsteen’s latest remarks, White House press secretary Abigail Jackson responded on January 18.
