Bret Baier of Fox News Opens Up About How Son Paul’s Emergency Heart Surgery Transformed His Parenting

Sharing His Family Story

Fox News anchor Bret Baier welcomes viewers into their homes each weeknight on Special Report. Beyond politics, he has also opened a window into his personal life — especially the story of his 17-year-old son, Paul.

A Challenging Start

Paul was born on June 29, 2007, with five congenital heart defects. As Bret once explained, “his heart was essentially pumping the wrong way, and we didn’t know before birth.” Within days, Paul underwent his first open-heart procedure. More surgeries followed at 10 months old, 6 years old, and again at 13.

After the 2019 surgery, the family hoped hospital stays were behind them — at least until Paul’s 20s. But in 2024, a routine doctor’s visit for a cold revealed something far more serious.

A Life-Threatening Diagnosis

An MRI uncovered a golf ball–sized aneurysm on Paul’s heart. Doctors warned that if it burst, it could be fatal within minutes. Bret remembers the shock: “It was exponentially more stressful and emergent, and we weren’t prepared for it. This happened literally within 12 hours.”

Paul faced yet another open-heart surgery, his most dangerous one yet.

A Successful Recovery

Thankfully, the operation succeeded. A year later, Paul is thriving and looking ahead. “The recovery was awesome. The doctors and nurses at Children’s National were fantastic,” Bret says. Paul, now a high school junior, has pushed forward with resilience and optimism.

Though smaller procedures like angioplasties may be needed in the future, Bret hopes the era of major surgeries is behind them.

Looking Toward Normalcy

Despite missed school time, Paul completed his junior year and is exploring colleges. His parents, Bret and Amy, emphasize one goal: a normal life. “Bottom line is, we want him to be a normal kid,” Bret explains. Paul plays sports, drives with friends, and still wrestles with his younger brother, Daniel, 14.

The family also enjoys travel together. Recently, they attended the Masters golf tournament — a perfect fit since Paul plays for his school’s team. Next, they’ll head overseas to celebrate summer.

Balancing Career and Family

While Paul focuses on the future, Bret continues his demanding career. In 2025 alone, he has interviewed President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He’s also working toward a sit-down with China’s President Xi Jinping. His latest book, To Rescue the American Spirit: Teddy Roosevelt and the Birth of a Superpower, will be released Oct. 21.

Even with such a busy schedule, Bret says Paul’s journey keeps him grounded. “Everybody has something they’re dealing with in their family. This was our something. It gives me perspective about what’s important. When I can, I unplug, put the phone down, and focus on my family.”
