Brave young girl, guided by her father, walked down the aisle to marry her childhood love just before her passing

Any parent will tell you there is nothing they wouldn’t do for their child. For Alina and Aaron Edwards, their lives were forever changed when their nine-year-old daughter, Emma, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. From the moment they received the devastating news, they held onto hope and fought alongside Emma, believing she could overcome the disease. However, after months of treatment, doctors delivered the heartbreaking news that there was nothing more they could do to save her.

Emma’s wish was unlike what many might expect. Instead of dreaming of meeting a celebrity or visiting a magical theme park, Emma wanted something deeply personal — she wished to marry her 10-year-old boyfriend, DJ. Their love story was innocent and sweet. The two had already tried to have a wedding at school when they were eight years old, even choosing their bridesmaids and groomsmen from among their classmates. Unfortunately, their teacher did not allow the ceremony to proceed.

With incredible support from their community and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Emma’s family moved quickly to make her dream a reality. In less than two days, a beautiful wedding was arranged. On the day of the ceremony, Emma arrived at the venue in a wheelchair, dressed in a stunning purple gown. Her father lovingly wheeled her down the aisle as she beamed with joy. The couple exchanged rings and heartfelt vows, and DJ sealed the moment with a tender kiss.

Emma’s mother spoke warmly of DJ, calling him her daughter’s “Boo bear” since third grade. He was a kind and protective presence, standing by Emma through all the ups and downs of her illness, always bringing a smile to her face. Their love and friendship brought light and comfort during an incredibly difficult time.

The wedding was a moment of pure happiness and love, a precious memory for Emma and her family. Sadly, on July 11, 2023, after a brave 16-month battle with leukemia, Emma passed away peacefully, surrounded by those who loved her most.

Her obituary lovingly remembered Emma as a bright and inspiring light — a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, friend, and “wife” to DJ. She touched the lives of everyone who knew her, leaving behind a legacy of strength, humor, and boundless love.

Rest in peace, Emma. Your courage and spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know you.
