Be cautious if you spot this creature in your home.

Silverfish, also known as silverfish, are those small, silvery-gray insects that are often seen running quickly through dark corners of the house. Although they may seem harmless, their presence in the home can be a red flag. In this article, we’ll explain why these little visitors shouldn’t be ignored and what steps to take if they show up in your home.

WHAT ARE SILVERFISH?

Silverfish are wingless insects with elongated bodies covered in silver scales that give them their distinctive metallic luster. They move nimbly and usually inhabit damp, dark, and cool places, such as bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and behind furniture. They feed mainly on starch, cellulose and sugary substances, including paper, cardboard, food scraps and fabrics.

WHY DO THEY COME TO YOUR HOUSE?

The appearance of silverfish in the home can be due to

several factors:

Excess Moisture:

Although silverfish are not dangerous to humans and do not transmit disease, their presence should not be taken lightly. Here are some problems they can cause:

Damage to Documents and Books: They are usually fed by paper, so they can damage books, important documents and photographs.

Destruction of Clothing and Upholstery: Silverfish can also chew on clothing, carpets, and curtains, leaving small holes.

Rapid Infestation: These insects reproduce quickly, and if not controlled in time, the infestation can become difficult to manage.

HOW TO PREVENT AND ELIMINATE SILVERFISH?

If you have detected the presence of silverfish in your home, here are some recommendations to prevent and control their appearance:

Reduce Humidity: Use dehumidifiers and repair any water leaks in the house. Make sure to properly ventilate damp spaces such as bathrooms and kitchens.

Maintain Cleanliness: Regularly vacuum the corners.
