Baton Rouge Sergeant Dies Weeks After Surviving Motorcycle Attack, Remembered as “Amazing”

A decorated Louisiana police sergeant has died after spending seven weeks fighting for his life following a deliberate attack that left him critically injured and ultimately cost him both legs.

A Deadly Targeted Collision

Sgt. Caleb Eisworth, 44, was heading home from his shift on June 16 when authorities say a 41-year-old man intentionally rammed into his police motorcycle along Greenwell Springs Road in Baton Rouge.

The suspect, who was arrested the same day, was charged with criminal damage to property, hate crimes, resisting an officer, and first-degree murder. Following Eisworth’s death on Sunday, District Attorney Hillar Moore confirmed he plans to seek the death penalty but said he will consult with Eisworth’s family before making a final decision.

A Decorated Career of Service

Eisworth served in law enforcement for 23 years, earning the Medal of Valor, the department’s highest honor, along with multiple awards for heroism.

Baton Rouge Police Chief T.J. Morse remembered him as more than a decorated officer. “Caleb was an amazing officer and a good man,” Morse said. “He spent seven weeks fighting hard to overcome his injuries, but ultimately lost his battle today.”

A Family’s Heartbreak

The impact of the collision was so severe that doctors were forced to amp*tate both of Eisworth’s legs above the knee in early July.

His family released a heartfelt message in June as the community rallied with prayers and fundraisers: “Thank you for every good thought, prayer, and well wish… Please say a prayer for every First Responder you see, and thank them.”

Eisworth leaves behind a wife and a 12-year-old daughter, who now face life without their husband and father.

A Community in Mourning

The sergeant’s fight for survival captured the attention of the Baton Rouge community, with neighbors, friends, and colleagues rallying to support his family. Fundraisers and vigils highlighted the respect he earned not just in uniform, but as a man of faith, courage, and kindness.

Now, the city is left to grieve the loss of one of its finest, a man who served with honor, fought with resilience, and left a legacy that will not be forgotten.
