Avoid getting too close to calm areas on the beach where no waves are visible.

Beware of Rip Currents

When you visit the beach, stay alert for areas with no waves. These calm patches might be rip currents, which can appear unexpectedly. Such spots often have darker water due to deeper depths and smoother surfaces with smaller waves.

Why Rip Currents Are Dangerous

Rip currents are fast-moving channels of water that can quickly pull swimmers away from shore. Even strong swimmers may struggle to fight the current. In fact, rip currents are responsible for 80% of drownings at sea.

What to Do If You’re Caught

If you’re caught in a rip current, stay calm. Don’t swim directly toward shore, as this could exhaust you. Instead, swim parallel to the shore to escape the current. Once you’re out, swim back at an angle to reach safety. If you can’t escape, float or tread water and signal for help. Conserve your energy and remain calm—this is key to surviving such situations.

Stay Safe

Be aware of these signs, and always stay cautious at the beach. Rip currents can be deadly, but knowing how to react can save your life.
