A Childhood Voice That Stunned Nashville

At just 13, Brenda Lee stepped into a Nashville studio, walls decked with tinsel and garland, and took her place behind the mic. The legendary A-Team musicians played behind her, expecting just another track.

But this was no ordinary recording. The young girl’s voice would make history. Her song, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” became a holiday classic, destined to live on for generations.

“I would’ve never thought in my wildest dreams that ‘Rockin’ would be my signature song,” she recalled to the New York Times. Framed gold and platinum records shimmer beside decades of touring memorabilia. A crimson pillow embroidered with the song’s full title sits proudly in her living room—but to Brenda, it’s just “Rockin’.”

In December 2023, the song achieved something extraordinary: it hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, becoming only the third holiday track in history to do so.

“I like that God has given me the favor to stand aside and know it wasn’t just me,” she told Billboard. “It’s a conglomerate of people who made the song what it is.”

Love at First Sight

Fame came early—and so did love. As a teenager, Brenda spotted Ronnie Shacklett at a Jackie Wilson concert. Boldly, she scribbled a note: “Hi, my name’s Brenda, here’s my number. I’ll be gone for three months in Europe, working.”

When she returned, he called. They married in 1963, when she was just 18. A year later, they welcomed a daughter, born prematurely at 4 pounds, 5 ounces. The newborn was in critical condition, yet the couple faced the challenge together.

Over six decades later, they remain side by side. During a 2023 interview, Brenda reflected, “Sixty years! Lord. And he’s a good man. I lucked out.”

A Childhood Shaped by Hardship

Brenda Lee was born in Atlanta’s charity ward at Emory University Hospital. By age two, she could memorize and sing entire songs after hearing them once.

Tragedy struck in 1953 when her father died suddenly. Her voice, once just a talent, became a way to support her family. That same year, she earned $35 for her first serious performance—a week’s wages in rural Georgia.

Brenda Lee: A Name Known Worldwide

Later, the world came to know her as Brenda Lee. Hit after hit followed, spanning rockabilly, pop, and country, crossing genres and generations. Biographers Mary Bufwack and Robert Oermann described her as “a prodigy so gifted, that melody is as natural as breath.”

Eventually, she retired—not from love of music, but because touring wore on her body. Her husband supported her decision every step of the way.

“He said, ‘Honey, you could sing as long as you want, but if there’s a point you don’t, don’t worry,’” she recalled. “The singing never got old, but the travel was wearing me out.”

She still performs occasionally for benefits or Hall of Fame events, keeping her love of music alive.

Still Rockin’, Still Beloved

Now 81, Brenda Lee no longer needs the spotlight. Yet it still finds her—on social media, where she shares family holidays, milestones, and everyday joys.

Fans continue to celebrate her. One wrote, “Lovely lady ❤️❤️❤️👏👏”; another shared, “I’ve listened to your beautiful voice since the early ’60s 💕.” Others declared, “YOU ARE SO ICONIC QUEEN!”

Though she has left the stage behind, Brenda Lee’s voice and spirit continue to echo across generations.
