Ashley St. Clair shares her and Elon Musk’s child’s name — and the internet has thoughts

A Secret Unveiled: Ashley St. Clair and Elon Musk’s Child

Ashley St. Clair has sent shockwaves through the media. The former Babylon Bee commentator revealed that she shares a child with Elon Musk—a boy named Romulus, born five months ago. She confirmed the news in a post on X after rumors surfaced that a tabloid was preparing to go public.

A Roman Name Sparks Online Buzz

The child’s name, Romulus, instantly ignited debate online. St. Clair’s earlier social media post had already hinted at the revelation, but her confirmation brought intense reactions.

On Facebook, users shared mixed thoughts. One commented, “That name isn’t as bad as some of the other kids’ names.” Another wrote, “I really feel bad for this child.” A third joked, “At least Romulus is a name, not a math equation like poor X Æ A-Xii.”

Instagram users chimed in too. Reactions ranged from “It’s his kid. Straight up,” to “Poor baby” and “What a name.”

The Wall Street Journal’s Report: A Deal Gone Sour

According to The Wall Street Journal (April 15), Musk offered St. Clair a $15 million lump sum and $100,000 per month in exchange for her silence. The agreement required:

  • Musk’s name left off the birth certificate

  • No public comments linking him to the child

  • No criticism of Musk

However, the deal lacked security provisions, trust funds, or life insurance in case Musk died before the child turned 21. It also allowed Musk to speak freely about St. Clair, without similar restrictions on his end.

St. Clair initially complied—omitting Musk’s name from the certificate—but refused to sign the full agreement. She feared it would make Romulus feel illegitimate.

A Paternity Test and Silence from Musk

St. Clair, living in New York, requested a paternity test—a legal requirement for child support in the state. She also tried to contact Musk directly, but he ignored her texts.

In February, anticipating a tabloid exposé, St. Clair made her own announcement online:

“Five months ago, I welcomed a new baby into the world. Elon Musk is the father.”

She said she had kept the news private for the child’s safety. After her post, Musk pulled the $15 million offer. When court proceedings began—focused on a paternity test and Musk’s request for a gag order—he reduced his offer to $40,000 per month.

Payments Slashed Again

By April 10, when The Wall Street Journal reached out to Musk for comment, St. Clair hadn’t received her next child support payment. Late that Tuesday, Musk’s team sent only $20,000, slashing her support again.

St. Clair said Musk’s advisor, Jared Birchall, told her other mothers of Musk’s children had signed similar NDAs. He also pushed her to sign one shortly after Romulus was born.

Musk’s Mission: Multiply or Perish

Musk often discusses his belief that humanity must become multiplanetary to survive. He’s also vocal about concerns over declining population numbers. According to insiders, he aims to father children with high intelligence.

During her pregnancy, St. Clair said Musk suggested involving more women to speed up this goal. In one text reviewed by the Journal, Musk said:

“To reach legion-level before the apocalypse, we will need to use surrogates.”

He often refers to his children as a “legion,” echoing Roman military terms.

In private messages, he also shared fears of assassination, calling himself “#2 after Trump” and adding, “Only the paranoid survive.”

A Pattern of Unconventional Parenting

This isn’t the first time Musk’s parenting choices have made headlines. In 2020, he and musician Grimes introduced their child with a name that stunned the internet: X Æ A-12.

Grimes later broke it down:

  • X: The unknown variable

  • Æ: Her elven spelling of “Ai” (love and artificial intelligence)

  • A-12: A tribute to their favorite aircraft

She explained, “It sounds like the name of the main character in a story.” She later confirmed the birth of their second child, a daughter nicknamed Y, via surrogate.

Grimes and Musk: A Complicated Bond

In a 2022 Vanity Fair interview, Grimes described her bond with Musk as “very fluid.” She revealed that Musk remained deeply involved with their son X, treating him as a protégé.

Grimes, who also goes by “c,” admitted her identity felt overshadowed by her relationship with Musk. She described physical trauma during her first pregnancy—hemorrhaging and collapsing from nerve pain.

The couple tried to keep their daughter’s birth private, and Grimes confirmed they used a surrogate.
