Meghan Trainor Explains Decision to Use Surrogate Amid Backlash
Meghan Trainor has broken her silence on the decision to welcome her third child via surrogate. She revealed the medical and personal reasons behind the choice after facing intense public scrutiny.
The 32-year-old singer and her husband, actor Daryl Sabara, welcomed daughter Mikey Moon on January 18. The couple, married in 2018, are also parents to sons Riley, 4, and Barry, 2, both of whom Trainor carried herself.
Surrogacy Was a Medical Necessity
Trainor explained that surrogacy followed extensive medical advice and was not her first choice. She shared that health complications from previous pregnancies, including PTSD after Riley’s birth, influenced the decision.
“It wasn’t our first choice, but after many conversations with our doctors, this was the safest way to grow our family,” she told People Magazine.
“We are forever grateful for that option.”
She also emphasized that surrogacy is rooted in love, science, and trust, not vanity or convenience.
Praising the Surrogate
Trainor described the surrogate as selfless, strong, and loving, and said the pair remained closely connected throughout the process.
“She gave us the greatest gift of our lives,” Trainor said. “She graciously answered our many check-ins to make sure she was doing okay.”
The surrogate’s identity remains private, but Trainor credited her with making the experience deeply meaningful.

Public Reactions and Family Details
Trainor announced Mikey Moon’s arrival on Instagram, sharing photos of the new family of five. She revealed that her sons helped choose their sister’s middle name.
Despite some social media criticism labeling surrogacy as unusual or controversial, Trainor defended her choice:
“Every family’s journey looks different, and all of them are extremely valid.”
Previous Pregnancy Challenges
Trainor’s decision was informed by complications during her first two pregnancies. After Riley’s birth, she experienced PTSD due to her newborn being rushed to the NICU. She described feeling overwhelmed and isolated during that period.
Her second pregnancy added further strain. She recounted in a 2025 essay for Today.com a severe panic episode after Barry’s birth, feeling exhausted and unsafe.
“Having a kid is the hardest thing. We’re expected to walk around like we’re fine. I want other moms to know they’re not alone and can ask for help.”
Surrogacy in Context
Trainor joins other public figures, including Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chrissy Teigen, Nicole Kidman, Rebel Wilson, and Priyanka Chopra, who have expanded their families through surrogacy. In the U.S., the process typically costs between $120,000 and $220,000, covering medical care, legal fees, agency costs, and surrogate compensation.
“Our baby girl Mikey Moon Trainor has finally arrived thanks to our incredible surrogate,” Trainor wrote. “We are forever grateful to all the doctors, nurses, and teams who made this dream possible.”
