Beloved Chef and Television Star Passes Away

Elle Simone Scott, a trailblazing chef, food stylist, author, and longtime cast member of America’s Test Kitchen (ATK), has died at the age of 49. Her passing follows a long battle with ovarian cancer, confirmed by her team to People magazine.

ATK announced her death in a heartfelt Facebook post, praising her contributions to culinary media and the lasting impact she left on colleagues and millions of home cooks.

Statement from ATK

ATK described Scott as a “beloved colleague and friend” who became an essential part of their team after joining in 2016. She hosted the podcast The Walk-In and created visuals for television, cookbooks, magazines, and digital content.

Scott also authored two cookbooks: Boards: Stylish Spreads for Casual Gatherings (2022) and Food Gifts: 150+ Irresistible Recipes for Crafting Personalized Presents (2024).

“Elle brought warmth and a vibrant spirit to everything she did,” ATK stated. “She will be remembered for her genuine care for colleagues and her dedication to the culinary craft.”

Fellow Chefs Pay Tribute

Television chef Carla Hall honored Scott on Instagram. “She showed up with excellence, generosity, and a deep love for food and community,” Hall wrote.

Hall highlighted Scott’s trailblazing role as one of the first Black women featured on ATK. She celebrated her confidence, joy, and the lasting influence Scott had on representation in food media.

Hall also praised Scott’s openness during her illness. “Elle faced ovarian cancer with courage and honesty, using her platform to educate, advocate, and uplift even while fighting for her life,” Hall said.

Early Influences and Career

Scott credited her late great-grandmother, Ann Jordan Ford, for inspiring her love of cooking. She described Ford as a natural in the kitchen, instilling both confidence and creativity.

Beyond ATK, Scott built a prolific career in food media. She began as a freelance food stylist and culinary producer in 2006, with credits on Food Network, Cooking Channel, CBS, ABC’s The Chew, and Bravo’s Chef Roblé & Co.

In 2013, she founded SheChef Inc., a Brooklyn-based nonprofit mentoring women of color in culinary careers. She also led SheChef Productions projects, including #HerFoodStory and Yo Stay Hungry, blending food, music, and storytelling to highlight underrepresented voices.

Education and Affiliations

Scott earned a Master of Arts in Entertainment Business from Full Sail University, a culinary certificate from the Culinary Academy of New York, and a Bachelor of Science in Human Services from Eastern Michigan University.

She was affiliated with the James Beard House, Black Culinary Alliance, and American Red Cross.

Legacy and Impact

Scott was the first African American woman to appear on ATK. Her presence reshaped the culinary landscape and inspired countless home cooks and aspiring chefs. She leaves behind a legacy of creativity, mentorship, and representation.
