Three Children Found Safe After Nearly Four Years
Authorities in New Zealand have confirmed that three children missing for almost four years have been found alive and safe. The dramatic search took place in the remote Waitomo region.
The Disappearance
The case began in late 2021 when Tom Phillips disappeared into the bush with his three young children — Ember, Maverick, and Jayda. Despite a massive search, the family remained hidden, briefly reappearing before vanishing again. Over the years, investigators suspected someone may have helped them survive off-grid, raising concerns about the children’s welfare during harsh winters.
Discovery in Rugged Terrain
On September 8, 2025, police tracked the family to a rugged, isolated area. Around 4:30 p.m., the children were found roughly two kilometers from a secluded hideout. Authorities described the terrain as extremely challenging and praised specialized teams for their perseverance.
“Knowing the children are safe and receiving care after nearly four years is an absolute relief,” Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers said. She stressed that the children’s welfare remains the top priority and urged the public to respect their privacy as they begin the healing process.
Challenges During the Operation
Although the children were unharmed, the operation proved difficult. One officer sustained injuries and is recovering in the hospital. Family members, including the children’s mother and grandparents, were immediately notified and are now involved in their care.
Questions Remain
The mystery of how the family survived for so long is still unsolved. Investigators are exploring whether others in the community may have helped them during their time in hiding. The case captured national attention in 2022 when surveillance footage appeared to show Tom and one child at a local store.
Earlier this year, Tom’s family made a public plea for his safe return, expressing deep love and concern for the children. While the father is no longer part of the ongoing investigation, questions remain about the family’s survival and the challenges ahead.
“While they are safe, this is just the beginning of a new chapter focused entirely on their healing and future,” Rogers concluded.
