A Pregnancy Changed Everything
After we discovered I was pregnant, my dog, Loki, started acting strangely. She rested her head on my belly constantly but growled or barked whenever my husband tried to touch me. I thought she was just possessive. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
More Than a Pet: Loki Was Family
Loki had been my best friend long before my husband came into the picture. She had witnessed every chapter—my engagement, our wedding, and now my pregnancy. She wasn’t just a pet; she was family.
My husband, however, had never connected with her. He didn’t feed her, play with her, or even pat her head. I didn’t mind—I was used to being her primary caretaker. Loki had comforted me during some of the loneliest times in my life.
A Protective Instinct
When I became pregnant, Loki’s behavior changed drastically. She lay beside me constantly, her head on my growing belly as if listening to the heartbeat inside. Every kick from the baby brought a wag of her tail or a happy bark. She seemed to celebrate every movement with me.
Yet the moment my husband approached and tried to touch my stomach, Loki stiffened. She growled, barked, and stood protectively in front of me. Once, she even snapped at his hand. I scolded her, believing she was just jealous.
The Chilling Truth
After my son was born, I discovered a truth so dark it still sends shivers down my spine. One afternoon, while my husband was in the shower, I grabbed his phone. I only meant to set an alarm, but I accidentally opened his messages with his mother.
What I read made my blood run cold:
“I don’t want this child. She’ll love him more than me anyway. Sometimes I wish he’d never been born. I hate him.”
For a moment, I couldn’t move. My hands went numb. The words blurred, but their meaning was crystal clear.
Loki: A Guardian Angel
Loki had sensed it all—the resentment, hatred, and danger—long before I did. She wasn’t just protecting me out of jealousy. She was guarding me and the baby from someone who didn’t truly want us.
Now, when I watch my little boy giggling as he strokes Loki’s fur, I realize the weight of her love and instincts. Her loyalty and courage saved him. If it weren’t for her, my son might not be here today.
