Suspicion in the Nursery
Michael froze, his mind spinning through alarming possibilities. He watched Gloria continue her secretive feeding—gentle yet oddly insistent. Emily squirmed, turning her head away, clearly rejecting whatever was offered. The jar’s label was hidden, but the secrecy alone triggered alarm bells in Michael’s mind.
Confronting the Caregiver
Summoning courage, Michael pushed the door open firmly. Gloria jumped, eyes wide with surprise—and a flicker of guilt. His heart thudded in response.
“Mr. Whitmore!” Gloria stammered, setting the jar aside. Her hands smoothed her apron instinctively. “I—I didn’t know you were coming back today.”
Michael’s gaze hardened. His voice remained calm but firm. “What are you feeding her, Gloria?”
Gloria hesitated, glancing at the jar as if it might explain everything.
“Just some mashed fruit, sir. She seemed hungry, and I thought—”
“Where did it come from?” Michael cut in, stepping closer. “It’s not in the kitchen supplies.”
Gloria’s composure wavered. “It’s homemade, Mr. Whitmore. I brought it from home. I didn’t think it would be a problem.”
Michael’s jaw tightened. “We follow a strict regimen for Emily. Everything is monitored to ensure her safety and health.”
Ensuring Emily’s Safety
“Of course, sir. I understand,” Gloria said hurriedly, blending apology with defensiveness. “I meant no harm. She was fussy, so I thought a little variety might help.”
Michael knelt beside Emily. She reached out with tiny hands, her face lighting up when she saw him. Her innocent trust fueled his determination.
“Emily’s care is non-negotiable, Gloria. You should have come to me with any issues.”
Gloria nodded, a mix of contrition and unease on her face. “I’m sorry, sir. It won’t happen again.”
Michael inhaled deeply, weighing his next steps. He had trusted Gloria, and the realization stung. Even if her intentions weren’t malicious, he would need to reassess her role and protect Emily above all else.
A Father’s Resolve
“Let’s make sure it doesn’t,” he said firmly. “I need to trust that Emily is safe at all times.”
Gloria nodded and quietly left. Michael lifted Emily, holding her close. Her innocence, her vulnerability—it was all that mattered. He vowed to take any necessary steps to safeguard her, including tightening the circle of caregivers.
As he sat in the nursery, Emily in his arms, Michael made a promise to himself: his work and wealth were secondary. Being a father—protecting this precious life—was his most important role.
