A Perfect Summer Afternoon

It was a flawless summer day—clear skies, a gentle breeze, and the fresh scent of grass. We spread a picnic blanket in a quiet grove while the kids played nearby.

A Curious Discovery

Our daughter wandered farther than usual and stopped by a tall tree. “Mom, Dad, come see! This tree has stripes—it’s so pretty!” she called. As she reached toward the trunk, something felt off. My husband ran over and gently pulled her hand back.

Hidden Danger

We realized the “stripes” weren’t part of the tree—they were caterpillars, perfectly camouflaged against the bark. Later, we learned they were Lonomia caterpillars, insects that can pose serious health risks if touched.

Acting Quickly

Thankfully, we avoided contact. We reported the caterpillars to local environmental authorities. They safely removed the insects and placed a warning sign for others.

A Lesson Learned

The incident reminded us to approach nature with both wonder and caution. Not everything that looks beautiful is safe to touch. Now, we teach our kids—and friends—to admire unusual patterns or unknown insects from a distance and alert experts. Awareness keeps everyone safe while still enjoying the beauty of the outdoors.
