A policeman appeared at my door after my cat returned home with mysterious puppies

A Strange Evening Begins

After my cat brought home puppies from who knows where, a policeman knocked on the door. His words made my heart stop.

The evening had started quietly. I was folding laundry when Lili’s voice suddenly rang out from the living room.

“Mom! She has something in her mouth again!”

“Who?” I froze mid-step.

“Marsa! A puppy! Another one!”

Marsa’s Tiny Surprise

I rushed to the window and couldn’t believe my eyes. My tabby cat, Marsa, was crossing the yard carrying a tiny black bundle in her teeth.

In the corner, a woven basket already held four others — tiny, eyes tightly shut, warm and velvety.

Marsa gently placed the new one next to them, licked it, and curled around the puppies, protecting them as if from the whole world.

I couldn’t understand it. Where was she finding these puppies? And why bring them one by one?

An Unexpected Knock

Later, a loud knock rattled the glass in the doorframe. I froze. Lili clung to my hand, sensing something was wrong.

When I opened the door, a policeman and our neighbor, Mrs. Miller — known for noticing everything — stood there. Her face was darker than a storm cloud.

“Do you have a cat?” the officer asked, skipping greetings.

“Yes…” I replied cautiously. “What happened?”

He studied me silently before speaking.

“In that case… you’d better sit down.”

A shiver ran down my spine. My heart skipped a beat.

The Truth Unfolds

I sat on the sofa, fingers wrapped around a cold mug of tea. Lili pressed close to me. Marsa, as if understanding the conversation was about her, slowly came out of the kitchen and sat in front of the policeman, staring with green, unblinking eyes.

“This morning,” he began, “a deserted doghouse was found in the neighboring yard. The puppies were gone.”

“And?” I whispered, my voice trembling.

“The owner claims she saw your cat carrying them away, one by one.” He paused, carefully choosing his words.

Mrs. Miller lowered her eyes and added softly: “Those puppies… are mine. Their mother died this morning. And your Marsa…”

I looked at my cat. She purred gently, holding the tiny puppies in her paws.

“I’m sorry for the misunderstanding,” the neighbor continued. “She must have behaved this way because we found other owners for the puppies. But she still needed to feel like a mother. I’ll bring them back right now.”

A Happy Ending

Mrs. Miller paused, watching Marsa tenderly lick her new little ones. Then she smiled and said:

“Let them stay with you. I think… it’s better for everyone.”

I nodded. Marsa, as if understanding every word, pressed her new family even closer.
