A Look at Donald and Melania Trump’s First Meeting, Brief Split, and Proposal with a 12-Carat Diamond Ring

A Chance Encounter at Fashion Week

In 1998, Donald Trump and Melania Knauss met unexpectedly at a New York Fashion Week party hosted by Italian entrepreneur Paolo Zampolli. Melania, a Slovenian-born model, caught Donald’s attention immediately. At 52, recently separated from his second wife, and attending the party with a date, Donald shifted his focus to her.

Melania recalled to Harper’s Bazaar, “He wanted my number, but he was with a date, so of course I didn’t give it to him. I said, ‘I am not giving you my number; you give me yours, and I will call you.’” Donald handed her all his numbers, and she waited a week before calling. “We had great chemistry, but I was not starstruck,” Melania told GQ.

A Brief Break

Despite the early spark, the couple faced challenges. They briefly split in 2000. Donald admitted to The New York Times, “Melania is an amazing woman… and she will be missed.” Melania initially had doubts, keeping her apartment to maintain space, according to her roommate Matthew Atanian. Within six months, they reconciled and began dating steadily.

The Met Gala Proposal

By 2004, Donald was ready to propose. He chose the prestigious Met Gala, during the “Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century” Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Donald presented Melania with a 12-carat emerald-cut diamond ring worth $2 million, set in platinum with tapered baguette diamonds. Melania told the New York Post, “It was a great surprise. We are very happy together.” On Larry King Live, Donald added, “We were together five years. We literally have never had an argument… I just said, ‘You know what, it’s time.’”

Marriage and Family Life

The couple married in 2005 at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach. Melania wore a Christian Dior gown that required over 1,000 hours of craftsmanship. Donald reflected on the wedding: “Marriage felt so natural. We just knew what we were getting into.”

Melania embraced her new role, proudly taking Donald’s last name. She revealed that her parents adored him and shared their hopes of having children. In March 2006, they welcomed their son, Barron William Trump. Donald told People, “Melania loves taking care of the baby… If we have more, it will be terrific.” Barron’s nursery occupied an entire floor above his parents’ bedroom, complete with a kitchen, living room, and quarters for his nanny and mother.

From Glamour to Resilience

From a Manhattan fashion party encounter to a brief breakup, and finally a $2 million Met Gala proposal, Donald and Melania’s love story blended glamor, spectacle, and resilience—the same traits that have shaped much of Donald Trump’s public life.
