How to Handle Earwigs in Your Home

While most homes occasionally host a variety of insects, some, such as earwigs, are less welcome than others. In rural areas, you’re likely familiar with common pests like flies, ants, and spiders during the warmer months.

For some, insects are a minor inconvenience, but for others, the presence of bugs is intolerable. Spiders and flies might be manageable, but earwigs often elicit a stronger reaction.

You’ve likely seen an earwig without realizing it. Despite their intimidating appearance, earwigs are harmless. However, having a large number in your home can be unsettling.

A Facebook user, Alicia Alexander, shared a successful method to eliminate earwigs. By placing a shallow bowl filled with half a cup of olive oil in your yard or on your deck, you can effectively trap these insects. They are attracted to the oil but cannot escape once inside.

This method proved to be highly effective for Alicia, as demonstrated by the number of earwigs collected in her bowl after just 24 and 36 hours.

While they are generally harmless, a significant presence could indicate rotting wood in your home, as they are attracted to it. Checking for and addressing wood rot is advisable. However, earwigs entering your home for warmth is normal and not usually a cause for concern.
