Tomás nodded at the driver but said nothing. His mind raced with thoughts of Alma’s letter and what awaited him at home. The bus engine hummed steadily, a distant rhythm compared to the storm of emotions inside him. Suddenly, a child’s cries pierced the quiet afternoon, coming from the pigsty. Tomás’ pace quickened, heart pounding. Military instincts kicked in as he rounded the corner.

There she was — Alma, curled in the makeshift pen. Mud and straw dirtied her clothes, tears streaked her face. A mix of anger, sorrow, and helplessness hit him, but he forced himself to stay calm.

He crouched, extending his arms. “Alma, my little one,” he whispered gently.

“I didn’t know how to manage,” she admitted quietly. “After you left, everything just seemed to fall apart.”

Tomás met her gaze, understanding the fragility their absence had caused. He reached for her hand, squeezing it reassuringly. “We’ll figure it out,” he promised. Rebuilding a home, he realized, was like rebuilding a town torn by war: it required patience, understanding, and love.
