Tears, Surprises, and a New Chapter
Jenna Bush Hager got emotional, and Hoda Kotb did too, watching from afar. Here’s how Kotb responded to the news.
After a year of rotating guest hosts, Today with Jenna and Friends is starting a bold new chapter. Jenna officially named a new full-time co-host, sparking excitement and emotions on December 9, 2025.
Jenna Reflects on the Past Year
In a heartfelt video, Bush Hager paused to reflect. “Over the last year, you guys, I’ve had the privilege of co-hosting with 60 incredible friends,” she said.
She admitted she hadn’t expected to get emotional before the show even began. “I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, I’ve made amazing friends, and I’ve learned so much about myself,” she added.
The Big Reveal
Then came the moment fans had been waiting for. “Today, I am thrilled to announce I have found my forever friend. We are starting a brand-new journey in January,” Bush Hager said.
She introduced a familiar face to viewers: seasoned broadcaster Sheinelle Jones, whom she described as perfectly embodying the spirit and heart of the show.
Jones appeared on set visibly moved. She walked toward Bush Hager, who clapped along the way, and the two shared a warm hug.
A New Era for the Show
NBC confirmed that Jones will officially step into her new role on January 12, becoming the first permanent co-host of the “Fourth Hour” since Kotb’s departure. The “Third Hour” lineup—Craig Melvin, Al Roker, and Dylan Dreyer—will remain unchanged.
Jones isn’t new to the co-host chair. She guest-hosted with Bush Hager in September, showing their on-air chemistry. At the time, Jones compared the experience to a first date. Bush Hager assured her a return was coming—and now it’s official.
Hoda Kotb’s Heartfelt Support
Kotb herself shared an emotional Instagram post:
“Ok. I am weeping—just watched @jennabhager and @sheinelle_o show us what a match made in heaven looks like. So proud of you both…#proudmom @jennaandfriends @todayshow”
Jones also revealed a private call with Kotb that left a lasting impression. Kotb offered 45 seconds of wisdom that changed Jones. She said, “Working with Jenna is going to be better than you can ever imagine. You’re gonna love it.”
Kotb’s Personal Journey
Kotb quietly walked away from NBC in January 2025 to focus on family and wellness. She swapped early mornings for journaling, meditation, and tennis. She launched Joy 101, a wellness company with an app, newsletter, and live events centered on mindfulness and joy.
She cherished small moments, like watching her daughter Haley, 9, sing “What a Wonderful World”. Kotb said, “There’s so much more to life. I wasn’t able to witness my kids’ daily lives before.”
Her youngest daughter, Hope, 5, faced a serious health scare in early 2023. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, Hope required constant care, which influenced Kotb’s decision to leave. Kotb described her daughter as “happy, healthy, and vibrant,” noting that diabetes is only part of who she is.
Moving Forward
Kotb first announced her departure in September 2024, after her birthday. “I realized it was time to turn the page at 60, and try something new,” she told viewers.
Now, with Jones stepping in, Today with Jenna and Friends enters an exciting new chapter, while Kotb embraces a quieter, more meaningful life with her family.
