Dr. Tanya Kormeili, a Santa Monica dermatologist, warned parents, “I advise against aggressive piercings, especially for minors.” She explained that hands frequently touch germs from doorknobs, food, and devices. Children may not maintain proper hygiene, increasing infection risk.
Injuries, such as snagging the piercing, can delay healing and trigger complications. Infections may enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting vital organs. Dr. Kormeili noted, “If you have a heart condition, you risk endocarditis [a life-threatening heart infection].”
Other dangers include compartment syndrome, blood-borne diseases like hepatitis C, and rare but severe conditions like toxic shock syndrome. “Given such risk, why would anyone do this at age 12?” she asked.
