Teen told he just had ‘growing pains’ dies day after diagnosis

A Sudden and Tragic Loss

Sixteen-year-old Harley Andrews passed away just hours after doctors diagnosed him with an aggressive form of leukemia. His family revealed that Harley had complained of feeling unwell for weeks, but doctors initially suggested he was suffering from a viral infection or “growing pains.”

Rapid Onset of Symptoms

After that early visit, Harley appeared healthy until last weekend, when he noticed blood in his urine. Concerned, his dad, Kevin Edwards, and stepmom rushed him to Royal Bolton Hospital. Doctors delivered devastating news: Harley had stage four leukemia. The cancer had spread extensively, causing irreversible damage to his internal organs and brain, leading to internal bleeding.

Community Rallies With Support

Kaylee Jackson, a close friend of Harley’s mom, Gemma, started a GoFundMe to help the family cover expenses, as reported by the Mirror. The fundraiser has raised £8,824 so far.

The campaign states:
“Harley was a bright, kind, and loving young soul who touched the hearts of everyone who knew him. His passing has left an incredible void in our community. No parent should face such unimaginable pain, and no family should worry about financial burdens while grieving the loss of their child.”

The donations aim to ease financial strain by helping with funeral costs, time away from work, and other unexpected expenses.

Family’s Gratitude

Harley’s mom posted an update on the GoFundMe page, thanking supporters on behalf of herself, Kevin, and the rest of the family:

“We really do appreciate it, and seeing how loved Harley was brings comfort to us.”

Remembering Harley

Kaylee, who worked with Harley at Newton Westpark Primary School as a teaching assistant, remembered him as an all-around good kid who cared deeply for his five brothers and four sisters.

“He was all about family, always with his brothers and sisters and friends,” she told the Daily Mail. “Harley loved playing football in the street with the kids and giving them piggybacks. He was just one of those kids everyone got along with. It’s a real shame because he was just starting off in life.”

Harley played for Leigh Town and Astley & Tyldesley FC, as well as Leigh East Rugby Club, leaving a lasting impact on his teammates and community.

How You Can Help

The family continues to appreciate donations and support through the GoFundMe page. They encourage people to share Harley’s story with friends and family to honor his memory.
