Zohran Mamdani to Become NYC’s Youngest Mayor in a Century
Zohran Mamdani, 34, will make history as New York City’s youngest mayor in over 100 years when he takes office just after midnight on January 1, 2026. He will also become the city’s first Muslim, South Asian, and African-born mayor.
Trump and MAGA Critics Launch Attacks
Despite his historic victory, Mamdani faces fierce criticism from Donald Trump and MAGA-aligned supporters. Trump labeled Mamdani a communist and threatened to withhold federal funding if he takes office.
On social media, Trump wrote:
“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, but Mamdani is not!”
He continued:
“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required. This once great City has ZERO chance of success, or even survival! It can only get worse with a Communist at the helm, and I don’t want to send, as President, good money after bad.”
Mamdani Fires Back
At his victory speech, Mamdani directly addressed Trump:
“Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up. If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him.”
He added:
“New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and as of tonight, led by an immigrant.”
Giuliani Joins the Criticism
Some of Trump’s staunch supporters also criticized Mamdani. Former mayor Rudy Giuliani, recently pardoned by Trump for his role in efforts to overturn the 2020 election, weighed in.
Giuliani stated:
“My advice to him is to step down and do something else.”
He accused Mamdani of supporting Muslim extremism after being seen with Imam Suraj Wahhaj, adding:
“The imam he was with is a strong supporter of terrorism. I’m not worried that he’s a Muslim. I’m worried that he supports Muslim extremism.”
Giuliani also called Mamdani a “security threat”:
“You think the federal government will give this guy a security clearance? Zohran Mamdani is a serious security threat to the United States of America. He’s a communist and a sympathizer for Muslim terrorism.”
Other Public Criticism
Before Giuliani’s statements, Mamdani faced backlash from public figures such as actress Debra Messing and rapper 50 Cent.
Despite the controversy, Mamdani’s historic win signals a new era for New York City, as the city prepares to be led by its youngest mayor in over a century—an immigrant breaking multiple barriers while facing intense national scrutiny.
