When America’s First Lady joins Britain’s royal family, it’s no small event. But during President Donald Trump’s most recent state visit to the United Kingdom, it wasn’t King Charles or Princess Catherine stealing the spotlight — it was Melania Trump and her head-turning fashion statement.
On September 17, the Trumps joined King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Princess Catherine for a formal banquet inside Windsor Castle. While the royals dazzled in traditional finery, much of the chatter centered on Melania’s unusual gown — a striking yellow Carolina Herrera dress paired with a thick satin pink belt and long emerald earrings.

The color combination was bold, but not everyone was convinced it worked. The shoulder-baring look drew plenty of attention for all the wrong reasons, with critics calling the shades mismatched and even outdated. For some, the clashing palette gave off a retro ‘80s vibe that felt out of step with such a regal occasion.
Compared to Princess Catherine, who wowed in a high-necked white gown detailed with ornate gold lace from neckline to hem, Melania’s minimalist dress seemed almost plain. Many wondered why she didn’t embrace a more traditional look with a bit more sparkle, given the rare honor of dining with the King and Queen of England.

Social media had its say as well. “Beautiful, but that belt doesn’t work with the yellow,” one user wrote on X, while another joked, “Melania clearly missed the dress code memo!”
This wasn’t the first time the First Lady reached for yellow during a royal engagement. Back in 2019, she wore a dramatic Valentino cape in bright yellow over a fuchsia top, paired with matching Christian Louboutin pumps. That outfit, worn to tea with then-Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla at Clarence House, was celebrated as one of her most daring and expensive looks ever — reportedly costing $7,700. Unlike this year’s banquet gown, that color clash was met with praise, with fans gushing over her vibrant style.

The difference? Context. While a tea gathering in 2019 allowed for a more playful palette, a state banquet at Windsor Castle carries far greater formality. For many observers, what felt fun in one setting came off as mismatched in another.
Not all of Melania’s looks during the Trumps’ latest trip were criticized, however. The day before the banquet, she was photographed walking with Prince William and Princess Catherine outside Windsor Castle in a tailored dark jacket and pencil skirt. She topped off the outfit with one of her signature accessories — a wide-brimmed purple hat that offered just the right touch of flair. The understated elegance of that look left many praising her style.

For Melania Trump, fashion has always been a powerful tool to command attention. This time, though, her bright yellow-and-pink ensemble may have made headlines for reasons she didn’t intend.
