People stunned after Trump threatens to cut New York City’s funding if a certain candidate wins

Trump Threatens NYC Funding Over Mayoral Race

President Donald Trump has warned he may withhold federal funding from New York City if the mayoral election favors a certain candidate. His remarks have stunned many residents and political observers alike.

A Shifting Mayoral Race

The race for NYC mayor has narrowed to three candidates after current Mayor Eric Adams dropped out of the re-election contest on September 30. Leading the pack is 33-year-old Democrat Zohran Mamdani, often described as a ‘socialist.’

Mamdani faces competition from former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, now running as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. With Election Day set for November 4, all three hope to secure enough votes to win.

Mamdani’s Platform

If elected, Mamdani plans bold reforms:

  • Free bus service throughout the city

  • Universal childcare for children aged six weeks to five years

  • Rent freezes to prevent steep hikes

  • Stricter accountability for negligent landlords

  • Tripling production of rent-stabilized, union-built housing

However, critics argue his proposals are unrealistic. The New York Times called his plans “ambitious but improbable,” while Cuomo criticized Mamdani as untested and too radical to manage New York’s $115 billion budget and over 300,000 municipal employees.

Trump’s Threat and Accusations

Trump has escalated the tension, calling Mamdani a “communist” and threatening deportation. On Truth Social, he wrote:

“Self-proclaimed New York City Communist Zohran Mamdani… will have problems with Washington like no mayor in history. He needs money from me to fulfill his FAKE Communist promises. He won’t get any, so why vote for him? This ideology has failed thousands of years and will fail again.”

The president’s comments have drawn widespread backlash. Senator Bernie Sanders responded on Twitter:

“Trump wants to withhold money from New York City if Zohran Mamdani wins. Really? Nothing says ‘law and order’ like extorting a city if they don’t vote the way you want.”

A Historic Potential Victory

If Mamdani wins, he would become the first Muslim mayor of New York City. His possible victory and Trump’s threats have ignited debate about federal authority, political influence, and the future of the city’s leadership.
