19-year-old cadet at Air Force Academy found deceased in her dormitory

Note: we are republishing this story which originally made the news in October 2024.

Cadet Avery Koonce Passes Away

Avery Koonce, 19, of Tyler, Texas, tragically died on September 4th in her Colorado dorm room at the U.S. Air Force Academy. According to an autopsy by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, her death resulted from complications of a severe lung infection. Experts suggest that timely medical care could have prevented this loss.

Rare Bacterial Infection Linked to Pneumonia

The autopsy report listed Koonce’s cause of death as “paeniclostridium sordelli sepsis complicating parainfluenza laryngotracheobronchitis”. This rare bacterial infection followed a viral lung infection.

Renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden, who reviewed the findings, explained, “In essence, she died of untreated pneumonia.” He noted that while the bacteria is rare and linked to severe toxic shock-like syndromes, the viral infection likely weakened her immune system. Dr. Baden added that her condition could have been treated with antibiotics and fluids.

Symptoms Often Overlooked

Before her death, Koonce likely experienced typical pneumonia symptoms, including persistent coughing, fever, and difficulty breathing. The autopsy revealed she had struggled with a chronic cough, which worsened in the days before her death.

Dr. Baden emphasized that many people underestimate their symptoms until it’s too late. This may explain why Koonce did not seek care in time.

Family and Official Responses

The El Paso County Coroner declined to comment further, and neither Koonce’s family nor the Air Force Academy responded to requests for additional information.

Athletic Achievements and Legacy

Koonce was a standout athlete. A high school track star, she ran the 100 meters in 12.12 seconds and the 200 meters in 25.67 seconds. She continued her athletic career as a member of the Academy’s track and field team.

Her parents, Eric and Kelly Koonce, expressed their grief in a statement: “Avery was an incredible bright light in this broken world. Her absence has left an irreplaceable void in our lives.”

A Somber Reminder

Koonce’s death has sparked discussions about recognizing the seriousness of respiratory infections. Her story serves as a poignant reminder that preventable illnesses can become fatal when untreated. While her family mourns, her legacy as a talented and inspiring young cadet endures.
