Returning From Military Service, a Father Found His Daughter Asleep in a Pigpen

Returning Home

Tomás nodded at the driver but said nothing. His mind raced with thoughts of Alma’s letter and what awaited him at home. The bus engine hummed steadily, a distant rhythm compared to the storm of emotions inside him. The war had taught him many lessons, but nothing prepared him for the anxiety of returning to the unknown.

The Familiar Town

Finally, the bus stopped in the small, dusty town where Tomás grew up. He stepped off, boots thudding softly against the ground, and inhaled the familiar, uneasy air. Adjusting his backpack, he began the short walk to his house, each step heavier with anticipation.

A Shocking Discovery

Suddenly, a child’s cries pierced the quiet afternoon, coming from the pigsty. Tomás’ pace quickened, heart pounding. Military instincts kicked in as he rounded the corner.

There she was — Alma, curled in the makeshift pen. Mud and straw dirtied her clothes, tears streaked her face. A mix of anger, sorrow, and helplessness hit him, but he forced himself to stay calm.

Calm in Crisis

He crouched, extending his arms. “Alma, my little one,” he whispered gently.

Her eyes widened in surprise and relief. Her cries softened into hiccups. She ran into his arms, clutching him tightly. Tomás held her close, feeling her tremble, knowing now was not the time for questions.

He scooped her up and carried her into the house, every step measured, every movement careful.

Rebuilding Together

Inside, he set Alma on the worn sofa and fetched a cloth to clean her face and hands. Miriam, his wife, appeared in the doorway, her expression mixed with surprise and exhaustion.

“I didn’t know how to manage,” she admitted quietly. “After you left, everything just seemed to fall apart.”

Tomás met her gaze, understanding the fragility their absence had caused. He reached for her hand, squeezing it reassuringly. “We’ll figure it out,” he promised. Rebuilding a home, he realized, was like rebuilding a town torn by war: it required patience, understanding, and love.

Facing the Road Ahead

As the sun dipped low, casting long shadows across the room, Tomás knew the journey ahead would be difficult. But with his family beside him, he felt ready to face whatever battles awaited — inside and beyond their home.
