Gary Sinise shares a deeply emotional story following the loss of his son.

Gary Sinise Opens Up About Son’s Final Days

In January, Gary Sinise lost his son, McCanna “Mac” Sinise, to cancer at 33 years old. Now, the actor shares emotional details about Mac’s last days.

A Fighter Until the End

Gary Sinise has helped countless veterans, but his personal loss has been profound. Recently, he opened up about his son’s final moments, recounting how Mac faced his illness with grace and determination.

Mac’s Last Days and Music

In his final months, Mac completed a music album he’d been working on for years. Gary recalls buying him his first drum set at age nine. “He played all through high school and studied music at USC,” Gary shared. Despite his illness, Mac finished the album in January 2023, a project that will soon be available on the Gary Sinise Foundation website.

A Final Viewing Party

Gary reminisces about Mac’s viewing party. “It was a joyful day,” he remembers. But soon after, Mac’s condition worsened. Though they hoped Mac would stabilize as he had before, doctors revealed that his time was short. Despite this, Mac found peace. “He was at peace, smiling, happy,” Gary says.

A Heartwarming Moment with ‘Forrest Gump’

In his final hours, Mac found comfort in watching Forrest Gump. Gary recalls, “I stepped out for a moment, and the nurse said, ‘He’s watching Forrest Gump on his phone.’” For Mac, it brought him closer to his dad.

Mac’s Cancer Battle

Mac’s journey began in 2018, when he was diagnosed with rare cancer. Despite multiple treatments and 25 different drugs, the cancer persisted. “There was no cure,” Gary reflects. Though Mac became paralyzed, he never stopped fighting. Gary’s determination to support his son never wavered.

Remembering Mac

Gary continues to share his son’s story, hoping to raise awareness about this deadly cancer. He wants people to remember that Mac wasn’t just a cancer patient but an inspiring individual. “It’s hard to believe he’s gone. It feels like he’s just on vacation,” Gary says.

A Fresh Start in Tennessee

In 2021, Gary and his family moved to Nashville, Tennessee, for a new chapter. He loves the slower pace and the focus on family. “I love it here,” he says. The move has allowed Gary to focus more on his foundation, which supports veterans and their families. This new phase is about prioritizing what truly matters—family, community, and giving back. Gary’s story is an inspiring example of resilience and purpose.
