Olympic Legend Faces Health Challenge

Mary Lou Retton, Olympic gold medalist and beloved West Virginia native, is fighting for her life in the intensive care unit. She is battling pneumonia, which has left her unable to breathe independently. Fans and supporters are sending prayers and messages of encouragement during this critical time.

Family Appeals for Support

Her daughter, McKenna Kelley, created a Spotfund to provide updates and seek assistance. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Kelley wrote: “Please consider helping our family out, and most importantly, please continue to pray.” She revealed that Retton does not have health insurance and has kept additional details private to respect her mother’s privacy.

Retton’s Remarkable Olympic Journey

Mary Lou Retton’s rise began in Fairmont, West Virginia. At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, just weeks after knee surgery, she stunned the world by earning two perfect 10s in floor and vault. Retton became the first American gymnast to win the all-around gold medal, also securing two silver and two bronze medals that year.

Life Beyond Gymnastics

Beyond her athletic achievements, Retton appeared on TV and in movies, including ScroogedBaywatch, and Knots Landing. She also served on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under George W. Bush and continues to act as an ambassador for gymnastics and the Olympics.

Retton remains one of West Virginia’s most celebrated athletes. Fairmont honors her legacy with a park and road named after her. The flood of prayers, support, and donations underscores the lasting impact she has had on fans and the gymnastics community alike.
